Family Life Education

Virginia's standards for family life education provide a comprehensive, sequential K-12 curriculum. They include age-appropriate instruction in family living and community relationships, abstinence education, the value of postponing sexual activity, the benefits of adoption as a positive choice in the event of an unwanted pregnancy, human sexuality and human reproduction. Instruction is designed to promote parental involvement, foster positive self concepts and provide mechanisms for coping with peer pressure and the stresses of modern living according to the students' developmental stages and abilities.

Family Life Educators will use health topic outlines and family life curriculum, for use in all family life instruction delivered in Colonial Heights Public Schools Schools.  Only screened videos and supplemental materials will be incorporated into the health curriculum. In all cases, FLE objectives will continue to be taught by qualified health education teachers and health professionals like our school nurses.

The decision to include a student in the family life portion of the Health curriculum is left to the parent or guardian. Opt-out forms will be provided at the start of the school year, but you may also print the opt-out form below and submit it to your school's main office. Alternatively, they can be found in your PowerSchool Parent Portal account under Forms. Parents and guardians also have the right to review the family life education program offered by their school division, including written and audio-visual educational materials used in the program. If you wish to review the curriculum, please contact your child's school's main office to do so.
