Website Accessibility Compliance

Colonial Heights Public Schools does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion, age, national origin, handicap, or disability in admissions to, or treatment or employment in its programs and activities.

We believe it is essential that our websites are accessible by all people. The Division will modify its current websites in a manner consistent with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended in 1998 (29 U.S.C. § 794 (d)) to make our web content more accessible to people with disabilities.

Web content refers to the information in a web page or web-based application including natural text, images, sounds, videos, and structure/presentation elements.

The Division is currently taking measures to ensure Section 508 compliance for all our websites. Beginning in July 2016, the Division has been working to identify non-compliant elements of our websites and how to address each element to ensure better accessibility.

Our project includes:

  1. Website audits have been performed using accessibility scanning tools to expose non-compliant elements.
  2. Our website content management system was upgraded in Fall 2017 to allow better management of compliance and best practice web design. The new websites include responsive designs for mobile clients and will have attention focused on image tagging and link description requirements.
  3. Employees that handle content development for websites are being trained on website accessibility and their responsibilities to ensure compliance.
  4. Beginning in Summer 2017, the Office of Technology and Learning will conduct both manual and automated accessibility tests on a regular basis to ensure compliance.
  5. The Division is utilizing the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines available from W3C and Section508.gov to guide its efforts.
  6. The Division will continue to address the needs of our user community as required.
