STUDENT VOLUNTEER INFORMATION
You are talented and enjoy many things. You want to make a difference in the world. Think about things you are passionate about, find needs in the community that match your interests, and develop a plan of action to bring about these changes in the world and in your community.
Colonial Heights High School will provide Student Service Awards for students who complete a certain number of hours of volunteer work each year.
Student Service Awards Hours will be awarded to students based upon the following criteria:
20 hours - Freshman
20 hours - Sophomores
20 hours - Juniors
20 hours - Seniors
To receive credit for participating in a volunteer experience complete the Student Volunteer Form. Students can use summer volunteer hours if it is documented. You will need a form for every organization where you have volunteered. The Student Volunteer Form is available in Room 1 or you can print it here. Return the form to Mrs. Rosson or Mrs. McConnell in Room 1 each month to receive credit.
All volunteer hours must be in by April 26 in order to receive a Student Service Award. Court mandated community service hours will not be accepted. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Rosson or Mrs. McConnell.
In addition, the Board of Education offers a Seal of Excellence in Civics Education to students who complete 50 hours of volunteer participation in community service or extracurricular activities that have a civic focus throughout a student's high school years.
Criteria to receive the Seal Of Excellence: The Board of Education's Seal for Excellence in Civics Education will be awarded to students who earn either a Standard or Advanced Studies Diploma and: (i) complete Virginia and United States History and Virginia and United States Government courses with a grade of "B" or higher; and, (ii) have good attendance and no disciplinary infractions as determined by local school board policies and, (iii) complete 50 hours of voluntary participation in community service or extracurricular activities.
CRITERIA Activities that would satisfy the requirements of clause (iii) of this subdivision include: (a) volunteering for a charitable or religious organization that provides services to the poor, sick or less fortunate; (b) participating in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, or similar youth organizations; (c) participating in JROTC; (d) participating in political campaigns or government internships, or Boys State, Girls State, or Model General Assembly; or (e) participating in school-sponsored extracurricular activities that have a civics focus. Any student who enlists in the United States military prior to graduation will be deemed to have met this community service requirement.
